There are many similarities and differences between Dipannita and her real name. Although both are derived from the same place and the same goddess, the only difference is the spelling. While Dipannita is commonly known by her real name, the others are spelled differently. Her real name is Dipannita sharma while she goes by the pen name “Dip”.
The story of Dipannita and how she came to be is an interesting one. She was found by her father when she was still a young child, abandoned in an orphanage. The orphanage director saw her and realized that this girl was more than just an abandoned child, that this girl was also beautiful. She took this beautiful girl to meet Nanda and requested Nanda to marry her. Nanda declined stating that he had already married three times before and he could not think of marrying a woman whose family was unknown.
Shortly thereafter, Dipannita was visited by a sage named Subhadra who taught her to read. From this point in her life, Dipannita started traveling around India and visiting different places. On her travels, she met Nanda, a prince who was in love with her. He took her to Assam where they spent time together, Nanda fell in love with her and asked her to marry him. Dipannita refused stating that she had already been to Assam and know that there are no countries attached to it.
Two months later, Nanda announced that he will wed her on the anniversary of Rama IV. On the very next day, on reaching Assam, Dipannita gave birth to Nanda’s son Venkanta. Nanda and Dipannita remained married for twenty-one years until Venkanta left to study in Pondicherry, India. By this time, she had changed her name to Dipannita and became known as the “orned lady of Pondicherry”.
