Bhanumathi was a recipient of Padmini Niwas, Ravi Hirani, Anushka Shetty, Priyadarshan Sankoh, Mani Ratnam, Dinesh Karneval, Mahesh Babu, Kanjeevrit Soman Nair and Aishwarya Rai.

Bhanumathi was born in 1847 in Alagar, now in Andhra Pradesh state in India. Her birth name was Bhuvaneshwar Bheem. Bhanumathi was apprenticed to a music director at the age of 16 in a small Telugu studio. She studied music theory and composition at the Government School of Music in Alagar.
Bhanumathi went on to study acting in the newly established Deccan College in Alagar. She worked hard on her craft and became an acclaimed character artist in the popular masala films of the time including “Kurban” and “Chakla”. She also appeared in some notable local Telugu movies, most notably, “Mankatha” and “Arundhati”. Bhanumathi’s first and only major role in any Indian film was in “Chakla” where she played the lead role opposite Arundhati Sen. After a few more films in various low budget movies, Bhanumathi finally made her international movie debut in the film, “Shodh”.
Bhanumathi’s first film after that was “Nemesis” in 1892, where she played the villainous role of Chhotelal. Her career throughout the next two decades was characterized by complex character roles in many prominent and award winning tamil films. Her last and first films in her career were “Shanghai Sex” and “Tribong”. Bhanumathi was married to Hindi film actor Vittoo Kanjee and was seen together on the set of many Kamal hassan and Mankatha movies throughout the years. She is survived by her two children, a son Ravi and daughter Premilla.
