Betsy Blair began to make a name for herself in Hollywood in the late fifties and the sixties. She made four films, all of which were successful: You Can’t Take it with You, I Married a Mailman, Irene, and On the Waterfront. After working for MGM for a few years she decided to leave to pursue her acting goals and went to work on one of the most far-fetched stories ever told, the Broadway play Irene.
It was the late sixties and early seventies when Betsey Blair was in the news. During the course of a television show, her husband committed suicide and she was arrested for drinking and driving after being stopped for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. The publicity that followed didn’t help Betsey’s popularity, but it did help to raise her profile. She appeared in other shows, most notably The Secret, that helped to cement her reputation as an actress with strong left-wing views. Following the death of her husband in 1986, Betsey returned to the limelight, playing a prominent role in the musical Everyone Loves Raymond.
Today, Betsey Blair lives in New Jersey and is known for her starring role in the television series Deadwood. The TV show was not a success, but Betsey has always remained active in politics, working as an advisor to politicians as well as serving as an activist.
