Bess Armstrong grew up in New York City, where she attended public and private schools. Bess Armstrong had a passion for performing from a very young age, even starting out as an extra in an adult play before getting a real part in a production. She went on to star in theater productions at the Forest Hills Theatre in Manhattan and on Broadway. After receiving multiple honors for her performance as a singer-dancer in the musical” smash hit” “Hair” (1977), Bess Armstrong received the first of two acting awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at age twenty-one. Later that year, she received another award for Best Actress in a Drama for her performance in “My Fair Lady” in London.

Bess Armstrong has portrayed many different types of characters throughout her acting career. Armstrong has been married and divorced several times, most notably in the mid sixty-seven timeframe. She has worked primarily in westerns and has often been associated with the icon cowboy, Cactus from the “Dancing with the Stars” series. Bess Armstrong was honored in 2021 with induction into the Television Hall of Fame as the second longest serving woman in television history, after Oprah Winfrey.

Bess Armstrong has achieved almost cult status in the United States and her honors span over four decades in the entertainment business. She was listed as one of the “uctors of excellence” on the American Film Institute’s list of the most outstanding women in entertainment. Her extensive filmography is marked by decades in which she portrayed iconic and memorable characters. She has also been nominated several times for awards, including winning awards for “Boyfriends” (for which she guest stars along with George Clooney and Matt Damon), “Forrest Gump” for which she was nominated for an Academy Award, and “Pages of Love” for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe. In addition to her acting work, Bess Armstrong has also produced several movies, including “My Fair Lady,” and has been an executive producer on several other successful television shows.

Much of Bess Armstrong’s popularity stems from her high road life, her association with the classic Hollywood clique, and her love of humor. Bess Armstrong had a reputation as being a ladies’ man in the seventies, dating both her husband and her close friend, Lee Strasberg. She was married twice, first to Richard Nixon’s secretary, Gene Vincent, and then to singer and actor Richard Nixon’s mistress, Angie Flowers. She has since been married to several Hollywood celebrities, including John F. Kennedy, Raquel Welch, and Bruce Willis. Bess Armstrong is justly known as one of the great ladies of show business, and she will always be remembered as a character trait and a lady of distinction, who enjoyed an illustrious career throughout the course of movie history.
