Archana Gupta’s personal life is shrouded in mystery, even by the biographers of her life. She was married at least four times and never disclosed her marital status or other intimate details. She was said to have got along well with men, but not with her own family. There are several theories as to her married relationships: She may have been involved with Shah Wali Allah, who was the first of her brothers to get married; she may have been married to Kamal Amrohi, a Mughal king; or she could have been associated with any number of people from different cultures over the years.

Archana Gupta’s Wikipedia page states that she was born in Mangalore, India on 1 March 1990 and was said to be thirty-one years old when she died. Her death certificate indicates that she died of a heart attack. There is another version of her biography, this time from her biographer, Sukhwinder Singh, who claims that Archana was actually buried in the garden of her home. This is a very minor point in comparison to the numerous pages of gossip that fill the pages of Archana Gupta’s Wikipedia page.

Archana’s other significant achievements include being a consultant for two Indian think tanks and she was also a consultant for the Indian government, the Reserve bank of India, and the World Trade Organization. The information on her resume clearly indicates that she was in the United States at the time of her death, but what is less clear is whether or not she had any work experience in India after leaving India and what her relationship with her former colleagues in the international market was. Sukhwinder Singh claims that she was paid a sum of “one million dollars” by the Indian government to work as their consultant in Washington D.C. at the time of Archana’s death. However, no verifiable evidence has been found to support this claim.

There is no doubt that Archana Gupta had a high level of exposure in the global market during her time as a consultant and it is likely that she would have enjoyed a similar level of exposure if she had concentrated more on her Indian market connections. The problem for Prof. Archana Gupta was that she focused too much attention on India as a market and neglected to build up an extensive network elsewhere in the world. Her biographers provide little information on what she was doing outside India in the months before her death, except to say that she was in touch with members of her extended family in India and in the United Kingdom. This is understandable since the vast majority of Prof. Archana Gupta’s friends were Indians by birth and she may have corresponded with them via letters, but it does suggest that Prof. Archana Gupta had a wide network of contacts outside India even during her working years in Washington D.C. She may therefore have had some influence on American policy toward the Indian economy in the aftermath of September 11th as well as on Indian policy towards the United States in general.

Archana’s life was a great tale of success and achievement. But her lack of foreign contacts means that her biographers have to make do with scant details. This is understandable given the situation and the time she was living. Hopefully, in the future, more efforts will be made to develop a comprehensive profile of this remarkable woman and the legacies she left behind.
