But the story does not end here. We are introduced to another element of interest, that of Ameeta’s husband, Aymeric, who is a wealthy Moroccoien. We also learn of their relationship with their daughter, Leila, whom Aymeric has adopted as his own child. As you would expect, the dynamic between these characters takes the reader through a roller coaster of emotions, from elation to sadness and back again. By the end of the novel, it is clear that the relationship between Aymeric and Ameeta has changed for the worse, although they still remain loving friends
As the novel opens with Aymeric addressing his daughter about marrying a foreign man, Leila reacts in shock. However, once she recovers, she relates the whole story to her father who goes on to explain that she had seen the advert on television which referred to Aymeric as “Aymeric the Foreign Millionaire”. It is at this point that we see that the whole tale of Ameeta’s life is nothing more than a clever ploy by her parents to lure readers into thinking that she has inherited the wealth of her late father. But it is the manner in which her parents treat her that raises questions about their true motives for luring Ameeta to marry a man from abroad.
The reasons given by both parents for wanting Ameeta to get married to a man from Morocco are repeatedly shown throughout the narrative. At the start, the motive seems to be based on a love of foreign countries and a desire to experience something new. However, as the novel progresses, it becomes apparent that the real reason for her marriage is financial. Ameeta’s father has told her that whenever she marries a foreign man, she gets forty thousand dollars in return as dowry. To add insult to injury, the dowry is to be given to her but she can only use it once to go to Africa where her husband is supposed to die.
But while Ameeta is being groomed for marriage, her parents are busy planning a secret trip to Africa, taking with them two maidens they intend to rape and murder. On the eve of their trip, Aymeric contacts Ameeta’s mother who puts all the pieces together and tells her everything. Then, a maid steals the set of dowry records from the house of Aymeric who then makes an immediate search for the missing papers. What follows next will leave you scratching your head as you read through to the end of this exemplary novel. An engaging read with a touch of fantasy, Ameeta Biography is the ideal book for readers looking for a romantic and suspenseful ending.
