Tracy Griffith was born in segregated Texas, where she grew up in segregated Little Rock, Arkansas. Her parents, Leola and Raynard are both teachers. Her childhood was filled with trauma – her parents divorced when she was four, and her mother became pregnant at the age of twelve. Tracy Griffith has said that she always felt like an outsider, as most kids from the south did.

At the age of sixteen, Tracy Griffith became obsessed with African-American culture, particularly African American art, movies, music, fashion and politics. Following her parents’ separation, she lived for several years with her grandmother in New Orleans. While there, she gradually formed a new identity – a half-sister, whom her parents later divorced, was her friend. After graduating in the early seventies, she began modeling part-time, first in local newspapers and then in television shows. At the age of twenty-one, she began appearing on Broadway. Her experience on Broadway led her to study acting professionally with such notable artists as Marlon Brando, Frank Capra, Andie Setter, and Jack Lemmon.

Tracy Griffith is most recognized for being one of the three original “wives” in the Beach Boys band. The other two were Beverly D’Angelo and Lisa Marie Fisher. She worked with the band from 1957 to their last performance before the group broke up in the early nineteen fifties. Tracy Griffith was married to Richard Castellano, a well-known illustrator and designer, for fourteen years, from whom she had three children. According to the biographer Michael Lewis, Tracy Griffith “never really felt that her role in the Beach Boys was meaningful” and considered it “rites”.

When she began working on her own, she found it more fulfilling to direct rather than act. She wrote, produced, directed, and acted in many of her best films. She had also written thirteen books of her own, which were turned into successful plays and television shows. Trisha Lee Griffith’s most well-known film roles were in the socially conscious movies such as Sister, Lover, Charmaine, and Meet the Parents. She also appeared in some smaller films such as Something To Do With Your Son, Rose Daze, and Who’s There.

In the late sixties, she appeared in a string of badly made horror films, including the remake of Sleepy Hollow and the equally bad Scanners. Despite her lack of skill, some people still consider these films to be good ones, despite the darkness and squandered potential of the genre. Tracy Griffith was also a regular on the soap opera The L Word, which lasted eleven seasons. Her final and greatest role was in the movie Camp III, in which she played the mother of one of the characters.
