Ayilya Gopalakrishnan Nair is an Indian actress best known by her first name Ananya, who has appeared in Malayalam, Tamil and Kannada movies. Born in Hyderabad, India, she was first spotted in a Bridget Jones Diary and went on to appear in scores of movies in different languages including Tamil, Hindi and Kannada. In fact Ananya has appeared in more Malayalam and Tamil films than any other female actor.

Ananya’s life changes drastically after she is shunned for marrying a soldier during the revolution. However, this all changes when Ananya witnesses the murder of thirty young men (including one named Warangal) at the hands of the outlawed Kallu Mariamman, an armed forces officer who wants to avenge his killed brothers. Forced to leave her home, Ananya adopts the identity of Warangal and returns to Bangalore to seek help from the police department, which fails to recognise her or the real Warangal.

But Ananya cannot just sit back and wait for the authorities to find her; in fact she returns to Kerala to pursue Warangal. Once there, however, she becomes involved with another crime that requires all the detective skills that Ananya is known to have. This time, however, she needs to enlist the help of an Indian investigator named Ram Mariamman, who lives in Kovalam. With help from Ram, Ananya tracks down and captures Warangal but then he turns against her and seeks revenge for the death of his brothers. Ananya manages to escape the police and returns to Kerala, where she is hunted by Kallu Mariamman who wants to avenge the death of his brothers.

In this second part of R&RK 2 (the second novel in the Malayalam series), Ananya’s past comes to the fore as she is called back to Kerala to help police authorities to investigate the recent attack on a bus carrying a group of tourists from Singapore to Goa. Once there, she discovers that the bus was attacked by terrorists who shoot at the passengers and take off with their cash and other valuables. Ananya makes the mistake of trying to bargain for the release of the bus conductor with the terrorists but this only causes the terrorists to double up on their demands and demand Ananya’s full name -which they can easily get from her birth certificate. This forces Ananya to leave the state -threatening to marry Ravi to get a passport and relocate to Singapore, but Ravi reassures her that she will not be forced to give up her academic degree Celsius -part bachelor’s degree or her citizenship. With the help of her friend Subodh Gupta, Ananya manages to get both the terrorists and the police officers off with minimal casualties. However, when the terrorists arrange to blow up the national air airport in Kovalam, Ananya has to save the national capital from a terrorist strike and save the lives of many people.

Director Shimit Amin, known for her documentaries such as Ananya and Gumana, takes a different turn with this biographical comedy directed by Priyadarshan Sahoo. The film depicts a coming together of the apparently unlikely – and then coming perilously close to each other as Ananya struggles to find her footing and work with her new partner in India, while Ravi adjusts to life as a family man in Kerala. The chemistry between Ananya and Sahoo is commendable and the film presents a comical depiction of their budding relationship, as well as Indian and Keralian life in general.

A fresh take on an old story, this film is definitely a must watch for those who have not seen the original version of Ananya Bhaidoo. Shimit Amin manages to add some very good twists to the tale and makes the film very entertaining. The message that the film is aimed at is one that is relevant to all women should stand up for themselves and fight for what they believe in, no matter how difficult it may seem at times. In short, this is an Ananya Biography that is updated soon enough and is worthy of its title.
