Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, better known as Varalaxmi Sathyam, is an Indian actress who has portrayed some prominent characters in Tamil cinema. She is best known for her amazing body structure and grace. The amazing physique of Varalaxmi Sathyam was first revealed in the Tamil movie, Thuppakki (1987), which earned her the first ever Best actress award at the Film Festival of India. Following this award she appeared in a number of popular movies including Rajkumar (1990), Bagmara (1991), Kappar (1992) and Kuttan (1993).
Varalaxmi Sarathkumar was born in Chennai on 25th August, therefore she was allotted the honour of being the first woman from Tamil Nadu to be conferred with the honor of Padma Shri. She is also considered one of the youngest actresses of India. She has gone through five love stories in her life which have been depicted in some of her movies. Her latest role is “Kodambakkam” where she plays a nurse. She is thirty-six years old and was trained at R.K. School and V.R. School in Chennai.

Varalaxmi Sarathkumar’s mother is a well-established personality in Tamil society and was a well known personality in the early days. The interesting fact about Varalaxmi’s mother is that she was once the president of the panchayattya or the local women’s club. This is a little interesting part of the Malayalam movie industry in which there is a lot of portrayal of women belonging to various strata of society. Some of the most notable Tamil cinema icons like Karan Johar and Karishma Tanna featured in their own movies. In “Kodambakkam” Varalaxmi plays the role of an aspiring film actress, while in the other movies her role is that of a bungler. She is yet to receive the Best actress award from the Filmfare Awards although her movie “Ekklisam” received the same award at the 2021 International Film Festival in London.
Varalaxmi Sarathkumar was married to a director named Ram Gopal Varma in 1969 but the two parted way a few years later. After the separation she went to work in London where she starred in “Nemesis” opposite Kamal Amrohi. She had then appeared in several high budget Tamil movies such as “Nemesis II: Madhumati”, “Bhel Puri”, “Singh in King” and finally “Mankatha”. Her last Tamil film “Chankatha” was made by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who is also an award winner for best Director category at the Cannes Film Festival.
Varalaxmi’s association with Madhumati is perhaps the most colourful one in the history of Tamil cinema. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar appeared in a song of Bhajan called “Dalai masti” (Daughter of the Gods) and it was this song that finally won her the Oscar for the same role of Madhumati in the movie. Following this win her association with Bhajan widened and she went on to act in several more movies of Bhajan’s. In fact, she acted in almost all of his movies from Madhumati to Baahubali to Mankatha. Other than her acting career, Varalaxmi Sarathkumar has also been known to be associated with theater and choreography. She has acted in some popular Telugu dances and has also choreographed a play written by her husband.
Today, Varalaxmi is a well-known name in the field of art and culture of Tamil Nadu. Her many accolades include being conferred with the Padma Shri award by the Central Board of Excise and Development (CBEC) in 2021 for her contribution to the film industry of Tamil Nadu. She is also a member of the Trishul Board of Film Awards and the Tuticas award, the most coveted of all the awards in the field of film and television. All these accolades make Varalaxmi the recipient of the largest number of Academy Awards of the world. Her other awards include the Best Actress award, the Best Director award and the Best supporting actor category.
